FDA Warns Doctors About Problems With Bone Drugs

On Monday, the FDA issued a warning to doctors and patients about the possibility of debilitating bone, joint or muscle pain associated with the use of various drugs, including Fosamax, Boniva, Zometa, Reclast and Actional.

The drugs that are the subject matter of the warning are known as biophosphonates, and are used to treat osteoporosis and other bone-thinning diseases. According to the FDA, severe pain can occur within days, months or years after starting treatment with the medications, and that the association between the pain and the medications "may be overlooked by healthcare professionals." The FDA is in the process of conducting a separate study and review of these drugs to see if there is a link to atrial fibrilation.

Fosamax has also been linked to osteonecrosis (bone death).
