Tort Reform Will Cure Decreasing Life Expectancy

According to a study released this week, U.S. women’s life expectancy is declining significantly. Researchers blamed the decrease in women’s life expectancy on high blood pressure as well as chronic diseases related to smoking and obesity. This news is shocking for a country that spends more on healthcare than it does on a military budget in a time of war.
But more shocking is that Dr. Nancy Snyderman, chief medical expert on the Today Show blamed plaintiffs' lawyers and said that one thing that would cure this decline is Tort Reform. Are you kidding me? While the researchers are saying that we need to vamp up efforts to curb smoking and the rising obesity rates in this country, Snyderman says we need to focus on Tort Reform. She claims that doctors are too scared to run tests and provide treatment because of the threat of lawsuits. This is the most ridiculous thing I have heard on morning television, which is well known for silly antics to get you up and moving in the morning.
Well Dr. Snyderman, I am a plaintiffs' lawyer and quite proud of it. I will never apologize for helping those injured by the negligence of others. But I will gladly find another line of work when doctors, pharmaceutical companies, product manufacturers, and the FDA start doing their jobs and thoroughly test their products, and quit treating the American public as lab rats. If a doctor provides the care that a patient needs, there is no risk of a lawsuit. If a pharmaceutical product thoroughly tests its product (and releases the results) prior to selling the product on the open market, then I won't have anything to do and I will use my skills for something else. But until that time, Dr. Snyderman, don't blame me for increased cancer rates, continued smoking in the face of known risks and rising obesity rates in this country. To say that Tort Reform will take care of these issues is blatantly negligent on your part. That one sentence alone sent my blood pressure rising this morning.
Oh, and by the way, why is it that the pharmaceutical companies have to include all sorts of disclaimers in their ads, but when Dr. Snyderman opens her mouth to rail against plaintiffs' attorneys, she doesn't have to disclose that she was a long-time member of the Johnson & Johnson payroll. That little tidbit is just not well known. Now her "Tort Reform is the answer for every evil" rhetoric all makes sense now, doesn't it?
